Abhilash Tomy’s boat collides with a Dutch ship
On Monday, Captain Abhilash Tomy’s boat, the Rustler 36 Bayanat, collided with a Dutch vessel during the SITraN Challenge race. The collision took place about 120 nautical miles from Gijon, Spain, at 2:21 p.m. Indian time.
Tomy, a retired naval officer, was inside the boat while two crew members were on deck when the accident happened. All three are safe and have resumed sailing, said a statement released by Golden Globe Race.
“GGR Race Control was informed today at 08:51 UTC by Abhilash Tomy that his Rustler 36 Bayanat had collided with Dutch-flagged carrier ROTRA VENTE at approximately 120nm from Gijon, Spain, position N55.4’/ W3.55′ as he completed the SITraN challenge in Les Sables d’Olonne, France,” he said.
Tomy’s boat was in radio contact with the Dutch ship which was freed at 11:30 UTC (17:00 IST). The vessel suffered minor damage to the bow and jib furling system and did not take on any water.
The statement said Tomy has resumed sailing to Les Sables d’Olonne, where he is expected to arrive within the next 24 hours. “Weather and sea conditions are mild with 13 knots of westerly winds and seas less than a metre,” he said.
The SITraN Challenge is a 240 nautical mile rally between Gijon and Les Sables d’Olonne and has race rules. Fifteen boats take part in the race and sail alone or with a full crew.
