DuPont Personal Protection, RecoveryPRO and the BELFOR Group have teamed up to perform a deep cleaning aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship following an outbreak of COVID-19 among its passengers and crew in February 2020. The collaboration between companies, along with protocol guidelines established by global health and safety organizations, resulted in an effective cleaning and disinfection solution allowing the vessel to be considered safe to navigate, according to DuPont.
When the outbreak on board surfaced in February 2020, the ship docked in Yokohama, Japan. Due to the severity of the virus, the Japanese government has asked the Diamond Princess to complete a two-month quarantine for the ship’s more than 2,600 passengers and 1,000 crew before corrective action can be continued. Once it has been deemed safe to proceed by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Princess Cruises, interim recommendations and protocols developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases were used to undertake intensive surface cleaning.
According to DuPont, a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the vessel was necessary to eliminate the threat of infection and prevent the spread of future disease. Training and education were key parts of the cleanup plan.
RecoveryPRO led the cleaning and disinfection project on board the ship with the help of its parent company BELFOR Group. DuPont Tyvek Personal Protective Clothing was used to ensure the safety of frontline cleaning crew employees.
The limited global supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) coupled with the need for clothing to equip three crews working around the clock presented additional challenges that had to be overcome for a successful refit of the vessel. Despite these challenges and unprecedented global demand for PPE, DuPont responded immediately by providing the appropriate PPE solutions for daily cleaning and disinfection operations aboard the Diamond Princess.
“We are proud of our partnership with BELFOR Group and RecoveryPRO and how we have all worked together to help keep hundreds of essential workers safe while meeting this critical need for cleaning and disinfection,” said David Domnisch, global sales director at DuPont, in a press release.
