“I was a little surprised”: women say they were stuck on a raft in shark infested waters
PENSACOLA, Fla. (NewsNation Now) – How would you react if you saw sharks circling around your inflatable raft?
It became the terrifying reality for a group of women relaxing in Pensacola, Florida, when a group of hammerhead sharks surrounded them.
NewsNation spoke to two of the women filmed surrounded by sharks. They said there were about five around their raft.
“Well at first I was a little amazed and I can’t believe this was happening. We had two of the sharks swimming under our raft. And it was really like astonishment, like it was really happening, ”said Casey Thompson.
Thompson had a broken foot and stayed on the raft with her friend Qyuston Eubanks until the sharks had completely passed.
Eubanks recalled, “She made the joke, ‘Well these sharks are coming for me, you’re going to throw me out’ And Lacey and I said, ‘No, we’ll protect you. We’re just going to be calm, and we’ll be fine.
When asked what their advice was to other people encountering sharks nearby, Thompson stressed the importance of staying calm.
“If you’re not kidding with sharks.” I mean, obviously we weren’t going to be in their way. We weren’t going to play with them. And they weren’t going to laugh at us. So stay calm and let them go. Especially the hammers. They are not known to attack humans. So we just let them do it, ”said Thompson.
Both women said they would likely return to the water soon and generally visit frequently.
