Mobile bids farewell to Carnival cruise ship
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Carnival cruise ship “Ecstasy” will embark on its final voyage on Monday.
“We’re going to say goodbye to him with our teammates, our Azalea maids, the bands, around 11 a.m. they’re going out on Monday and we invite the public to come out and experience it,” said David Clarke, CEO of VisitMobile.
Avid cruisers who have sailed her in the past have booked rooms on ‘Ecstasy’ for her latest cruise.
“Carnival Ecstasy has created so many memories for cruise passengers over the past 30 years. I think it’s sailed from 9 different ports, 5.5 million passengers, we have returning couples who got engaged on the ship 30 years ago,” Clarke added.
Local businesses say they will miss the ship’s visitors. Clark says it brought 200,000 people to Port City a year – staying in 35,000 hotel rooms.
“We’re really – a little sad – to see Carnival stepping down for a while. We’re looking for someone to come back because we appreciate the business. We appreciate the people who bring this to Mobile,” one owner said. of business.
“We can definitely tell when there’s a crowd going through the cruise or coming back from the cruise, so we’re going to miss a lot of foot traffic and you can definitely tell that’s impacting business,” Nicole Moore said.
Some companies have even formed long-term friendships with teammates.
“We also have some of the crew personnel coming to visit us; it’s also very nice. It’s nice to follow them and keep in touch with them – and like I said, we can tell when the cruises come and go,” added Moore.
Although there will be an empty port once the Ecstasy leaves, Clark says a new ship, “Spirit”, will replace it in a year.
“The really cool thing there – the best ever ship, starting next October, that has ever left Mobile. With the best ever itinerary – it’s 6 and 8 day trips – we never had that opportunity,” Clark said.
There will be a farewell ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 10 in downtown Port. The event is free and open to the public.
